Source: A Random Walk Through Ada
Ada Lovelace is considered to be the first programmer and she invented the binary system that computers use. The Ada language was based on her name. It used to be that most programmers were women from the 1950s to the 1960s and in the 1970s when Microcomputers came about that are cheaper than mainframes and minicomputers, men and boys started to use them for video games and other things.
The Ada language is a DOD standard language, it uses black box technology to have parts of the program communicate with other parts of the program that are written by different programmers to work together.
A lot of Ada is based on Pascal, and a lot of software like Oracle PL/SQL and Crystal Reports scripting language is based on Ada. This was done to get US federal government contracts.
Ada compilers can be costly, up to $10,000 a person. Some open source and free Ada compilers are free and don’t cost anything but may not be up to standard with the other compilers.
I learned Ada in 1989 with Janus Ada. It was a DOS based Ada compiler that the college had bought for use with the class. I’ve seen old Ada books sold in dollar stores for $1 based on the 1980s version of Ada. You can also find them at Amazon.com in a used book format for $1 plus shipping.
