Why do so few people major in computer science? | Dan Wang

The number of people who majored in computer science in the US isn’t much higher in 2015 than in 2005. Why do so few students major in computer science?

I’ve studied computer science at UM Rolla now Missouri Science and Technical. It is very hard to study and learn unless you have a background in science and math from high school.

When I went more people wanted to be Electric Engineers instead. They did well until China had factories moved there and had Chinese Electrical Engineers work for less. I saw in the student center Chinese foreign students as I played video games and pinball there, they did as well.

Then India took over the IT/Computer Science as the Internet allowed companies to move their helpdesks and programmers over to India. So less people started studying it here.

Many just dropped out of college and universities and went west to California or Washington to work in areas that had computer companies and startups working out of various cities.

A factor not everyone considers is the cost of college and university degrees have gone up, and student loans are so high that even if a graduate gets a job, might not make enough to pay it off.

So maybe we need more scholarships for computer science, and a tuition discount for certain students like females, racial minorities, etc to study it.
